Students at MSOE Working on EWH Project  Milwaukee, WI (January 8, 2009 - Updated April 15, 2009) - Alpha Source, Inc has joined forces with students from the Marquette University Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Healthcare Without Borders (HWB) to assemble defibrillator battery test kits that will be distributed and used in hospitals of developing countries.

The unassembled defibrillator battery test kits will be purchased by Alpha Source from Engineering World Health (EWH), a charitable organization founded to harness the resources of collegiate engineering programs and professional engineers for the improvement of conditions in hospitals of the developing world.

Once the kits have been assembled and tested, they will be used to test the electrical charge levels of defibrillators.  EWH will forward the kits on to partner hospitals directly or through students participating in the EWH Summer Institute.  The EWH Summer Institute gives engineering, physics and chemistry college students the opportunity to get hands-on repair and design experience while simultaneously helping disadvantaged hospitals and patients at facilities in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras and Tanzania.

Dr. Kris Ropella, Biomedical Engineering Department Chair of Marquette University and Dr. Samantha Jacques, Biomedical Engineering Program Director of MSOE, both found this joint venture a great opportunity to engage the students academically as well as expose them to global healthcare improvement initiatives.  By working on this project Marquette and MSOE students will get basic soldering and electrical circuit experience through assembling and testing the kits donated by Alpha Source.

â??A part of our corporate mission is to work with charitable organizations that focus on providing quality healthcare worldwide.  When I was introduced to the EWH program and the opportunity to engage young minds in the process, I wanted to make an impact and get involved,â?? said Alpha Source President Norine Carlson-Weber.

MSOE student Catherine Weitenbeck (MSOEâ??s EWB President) and Marquette student Kevin Vincent (Marquetteâ??s BSME President) are both excited about collaborating with Alpha Source and students from another Wisconsin university on a project that allows them to develop their engineering skills and make a difference.

â??Building kits for free distribution to developing country hospitals is a great way for collegiate engineering programs to contribute to improving the lives of people who live in poor and vulnerable communities, where having reliable equipment can literally mean the difference between life and deathâ??, says Frank Webb, the Executive Director of EWH. â??We are excited to see this wonderful gesture from Alpha Source and the students at Marquette University and Milwaukee School of Engineering.â??

Kits will be assembled at MSOE on Saturday, January 17th and Marquette on Wednesday, January 21st and Saturday, January 24th.

Engineering World Health, founded in 2001 by Dr. Robert Malkin and Dr. Mohammad Kiani, is a national organization with chapters at schools in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.  EWH works in close partnership with Duke University, which manages the Engineering World Health Summer Institute program.
